Newtownstewart provides the setting for the majestic ruins of the Gaelic stronghold of The O’ Neills. Although traditionally associated with Henry Aimbreidh O’Neill who died in 1392 it is not certain whether it dates from the 14th century or 15th century. It is an unusual and interesting structure and especially importatnt in relation to the study of native Irish Medieval life prior to the plantation period. The castle consisted originally of a two storey rectangular construction fronted by it’s most visible remaining features- a pair of D-shaped towers. Other surviving attributes include a draw bar slot for the main door, a latrine chute and marks of wicker centering in the tower vaults.
Situated approximately 1 km S.W. of Newtownstewart and Signposted from the town, Harry Avery’s Castle fetures in “The Journey In Time” Archaelogical Tour with interpretation available on site.
